Sirovasthi
This is an effective treatment for many diseases of the head, face, and central nervous system. Sirovasthi is ideal for facial paralysis, migraine, head ache, insomnia, memory loss, mental stress, dry nose, dryness of the eye and also for cervical spondylosis. Though useful in all Dosha types of ailments, the treatment is more useful in Vatta related diseases.
Sirovasthi is the retention of warm medicated oil over the head for a certain amount of time. This oil is a prepared mixture of gingerly oil, Staff Tree, castor oil, ghee, common milk, and medicated herbs like bala, winter cherry, black gram, castor plant, bacopa etc. There are special ways and methods in which the herbs and oils are boiled in order to extract their full medicinal properties.
The first step of Sirovasthi starts with the application of warm herbal oil all over the body. This nourishes the nerve endings and prepares the body for the main treatment. The next step is to carefully fix an elongated leather cap around the person’s head into which medicated oil of tolerable warmth is poured. The oil has to be retained on the head for about 30 to 45 minutes based on the person’s tolerance level.
During this process, the therapeutic properties of the medicated oil acts on the person’s brain and tunes up his central and autonomous nervous system. The brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and the sympathetic nerves receives the medicinal effects of the oil. As a result, various nerve disorders get mended and the mind gets relieved from conflicts and stress.
The timing and periodically of the treatment varies according to the condition of the patient and type of disease. Usually, the doctor gives a 7 or 14 day treatment course. As a part of the whole treatment, the doctor with also give directions about the person’s diet patterns and his oral medicines like Kashayam (decoction) and Lehyam (semi solid). Yoga, the powerful stress reliever, could also be a part of this treatment.

Sirodhara
This is an oil based treatment effective for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease, complex headaches, insomnia, depression, sleeplessness, and various other neurological disorders. The treatment involves lavish pouring of medicated oil on the persons’s forehead. Since treatment is done directly on the head, its therapeutic properties activate the brain cells directly.
Sirodhara is also a potential rejuvenating therapy. It relaxes and calms the mind, and helps to tune up the brain and improve memory. This allows the body organs to function efficiently and keep the person disease free and in a state of positive health.
The warm, medicated oil is poured on to the person’s forehead, nonstop, for about 30 to 40 minutes, from a height of about 4 inches. For this, the oil-filled vessel is hung above the treatment table and the oil is let to flow on the forehead in rhythmic ways.
The uninterrupted flow of warm oil stimulates and activates the brain cells and nervous system; increases the blood circulation; and it also calms down the mind and reduces mental stress. As a result, not only the impacts caused by the disease are reduced, but the person’s body and mind also get recharged and refreshed.
A large number of nerve stimulating herbs, fruits and nourishing oils are used in the preparation of the medicated oil. Gooseberry and bala are good examples of such

Herbal powder, medicated castor oil, or herbal paste is commonly used as the purgative medicine. The treatment usually begins early in the morning. It starts with the “must do” pre operative procedures “snehapanam” and “swedanam”. These are lubricating methods to make the body get ready for virechanam. Next, the person consumes the appropriate herbal medicine in empty stomach. The medicine does a good cleansing of the entire digestive system. And within 1 to 2 hours he empties his bowels, expelling along with it, all the accumulated toxins.

Nasyam
Nasyam is the instillation of herbal medicines through the nostrils. Its impacts are very diverse. It removes mucous clogs, cleans and clears the head channels, and also stimulates the brain cells and central nervous system. It is one among the five Panchakarma treatments.
It is commonly used to treat diseases like paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, complex headache, acute sinusitis, diseases of the head, neck and nose, Bell’s palsy, Arthritis, and cervical spondylosis.
Nasyam is also a powerful rejuvenate therapy. Extended treatments give wonderful results for good heath management. It stimulates the brain cells and promotes intelligence and memory power; prevents ageing, refreshes oral cavities, and improves hair growth. The sensory organs become stronger, immunity builds up and the person becomes cheerful and brisk. Betterment of sound quality and skin texture are also the benefits of doing nasyam.
The treatment commences with the preconditioning of the person’s body. This is a short oil massage of the head, face, and neck followed by brief steaming. Next, the person lies down comfortably with his head slightly raised and head lowered. Drops of warm medicine are poured into each of his nostrils and he is made to inhale deeply, while the other nostril is kept closed with the thumb. The whole process takes about 20 to 30 minutes and to get effective results it is continued for 7 to 14 days.
While in curative treatments, mostly a single strong dose of nasyam a day is sufficient; in wellness therapies, it could go up to 15 mild doses per day.
Renowned oils such as fortified Ksheerabala, Anuthailam, and Karpasasthyady are commonly used for the instillation. These oils are a mix of very potential healing herbs, decoctions, milk, and ghee. These include bael, vitex, myrobalan, sida, nut grass tuber, guggul, cardamom, roots of bael, cinnamon, sarasaparilla, sesame oil, goat’s milk, rainwater, etc.

Vasthi
Vasthi is the ace amongst all Panchakarma treatments. In simple terms, vasthi means medicated enema. It washes out all your toxins through the digestive tract. It alleviates constipation, distention, chronic fever, the common cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, piles, backache, and hyper activity. Rheumatoid and gouty arthritis are also treated by vasthi.
Since medicines reach your bowels directly without enzymatic actions, its effectiveness is very high. Hence, vasthi is also done along with many other Ayurvedic treatments. Due to its potential healing ability, vasthi is considered as “half the treatment”, for many of these types of diseases.
As a rejuvenating health treatment, vasthi imparts high immunity and longevity, reduces degeneration of tissues, and prevents ageing.
Honey, rock salt, herbal pastes, oils, and decoctions are the main ingredients of the preparation used for vasthi. After the pre operative procedures, the medicinal preparation is introduced into the bowel through the anus. It takes just about 5 minutes for this, but the patient has to retain it for at least another 15 minutes before expelling it out.
The medicine pulls out the toxins from the entire body channels into the bowels, which are then expelled out of the body.
Vasthi should be done only under the strict guidance of doctors. The periodicity of enema, the retention time, the type and amount of medicines used, food habits etc. varies from person to person. The usual recommended course is 3 or 5 vasthi.
The decoctions used in Vasthi are good toxin eliminators. Dill seed used for making the herbal paste is a pain and inflammatory reducer. The rock salt increases penetration and honey helps in spreading the medicines faster in the bowels.

Udvarthanam
Body massage using herbal powder is called udvarthanam. The treatment is good for diseases like diabetic neropathy, paralysis, obesity, skin care, sciatica, indigestion and sclerosis of blood vessels. The massage activates the nerves and increases blood flow to the impaired parts of the body.
Udvarthanam is also an important health preserving massage. As the massage promotes active blood flow, it revitalizes and reconditions the body, thus preserving its strength, skin texture, and natural elasticity. Fat reduction is one of the significant benefits in cases of obesity.
“Thriphala”, is the most commonly used powder in the treatment. It is a mixture of excellent nerve stimulating agents such as Gooseberry, Belerica, and Myrobalan. The medicated powder is applied all over the body and massage is done in the opposite direction of the hair roots, with appropriate pressure. Extra massage is provided on specific parts of the body depending on the type of disease.
The massage goes on for about 30 to 40 minutes. During this time, the body surface slightly warms up and expels traces of toxic coatings on its nerve endings. This facilitates faster nerve stimulation and blood circulation to the damaged areas of the body. Udvarthanam also promotes elasticity of the skin and makes the body soft and fatigue-free.
The duration and type of medicine to be used are decided by the physician after considering various related factors such as the person’s body constituency, his digestive capacity, psychic state, age, strength etc. Herbal medicines like Kashayam (decoction), Gulika (pills), and Choornam (powder) are also given along with the massage. Usually, one to two weeks treatment, along with strict carbo-less diet gives good results.
Other herbs commonly used for udvarthanam are costus roots, deodar, Senna, horse gram, phyllanthus and mustard. Horse gram and mustard, considered to be hot in nature are very good nerve stimulators.

Njavarakizhi
Various neuromuscular disorders and degenerative muscle diseases are treated by this method. This is a tissue- nourishing treatment, using highly nutritious rice called “Njavara”. Hence, its benefits in treating paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, cervical spondylosis, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy, inter vertebral disc prolapse, rheumatoid arthritis etc. are superior.
Njavarakizhi is also an excellent rejuvenating therapy to keep the body young and healthy. It nourishes the muscles, improves their tone, and imparts longevity.
The person is first preconditioned by applying mild oil on the body and head, and is made to lie down relaxingly. Warm “Njavara” rice, cooked with herbal decoction and milk, is squeezed out through a cotton pouch and massaged on to the whole body of the person. This continues for about 30 to 40 minutes until the whole preparation is evenly spread on the body. As soon as the rice spread looses its warmth, it is completely wiped off and warm oil is applied on the body. The person lies idle for another 30 minutes before he goes for a warm refreshing shower.
In the meantime, the rice and herb mixture infuse their properties into the body tissues and nourish them. This revitalizes the deficient areas of the body, reduces its degeneration, and stops muscle wastage. And as a result of extended treatments of 2 to 3 weeks the body recoups its lost vitality.
Oral medicines like Lehyam (semi solid) and Kashayam (decoction) to be taken along with the treatment will give much more effective results. Other than the nourishing rice “Njavara”, vetiver, ghee, gingerly oil, milk, and herbs like sida, deodar, mustard etc. are also used in making the decoction and preparation.
